A couple of months ago Dermalogica launched an innovative product to add to your bedtime regimen called the Sound Sleep Cocoon which is a revitalizing treatment gel-cream that works with the skin’s natural overnight repair and recovery process to optimize the skin benefits of sleep that we do get, delivering glowing skin by morning. The Sound Sleep Cocoon is formulated with motion-activated essential oils to soothe senses with aromatherapy and promote deep, restful sleep for healthier-looking skin.
Did you know that lack of sleep can cause health problems and affect your quality of life? When it comes to healthy looking skin sleep is crucial for the skins recovery from the assaults of the day such as pollution, sun exposure etc. A few nights of missed sleep can lead to dull skin and fine lines, and chronic sleep deprivation leads to dark circles and early aging I’m sure we are all familiar with these symptoms as a lot of us struggle with not getting enough sleep.
Dermalogica created a product that will help promote sleep and also give you glowing skin in the morning. Because skin is best able to absorb active ingredients at night, Sound Sleep Cocoon delivers active ingredients while you sleep to transform skin by morning. It also helps to infuse skin with essential hydration that’s lost throughout the day.
Below is a list of the active ingredients found in the Sound Sleep Cocoon and how each ingredient works for your skin:
- Persian Silk Tree Extract: reduces signs of skin fatigue and restores vitality.
- Wu-Zhu-Yu Extract (fruits used in traditional Chinese medicine) provides visibly radiant skin by morning and promotes a more refined skin texture.
- Kakadu Plum Extract, rich in antioxidant Vitamin C, is clinically shown to improve and brighten skin tone.
- Tamarind Seed Extract is a polysaccharide that cushions skin, creating a nourishing cocoon of comfort for softer, more hydrated skin.
- Encapsulated, motion-activated French Lavender essential oil, along with calming Sandalwood and Patchouli, soothe the senses with aromatherapy to help promote deep, restful sleep for healthier-looking skin.
The Sound Sleep Cocoon is formulated without artificial fragrances or colours.
I first seen the Sound Sleep Cocoon on Dermalogica’s International Instagram page when it was launched internationally and was fascinated by the packaging. I assumed that the packaging could somehow play white noise to help achieve deep sleep but to my slight disappointment at the S.A launch I realised that it does not play white noise but the packaging and product intrigued me nonetheless.
The Sound Sleep Cocoon comes in a grey and turquoise box, when the grey top is removed the bottom half of the box opens up like a butterfly revealing the 50ml tub, a leaflet and the opened up box has points on what a good night’s rest can help with which are:
- Sleep improves blood flow as well as your skin health.
- Reparative skin care products work their best when you’re asleep.
- A good night’s sleep can boost your creativity.
- In REM sleep, your brain consumes more energy than when you’re awake.
Back to the packaging…the 50ml tub is different to any other packaging I have seen. It’s round, the top half is white with the name of the product and images of the moon phases around the top, the bottom half is grey and slightly smaller than the top and on the side there’s a slit (opening) that releases the product when the top and bottom of the tub is squeezed together. To release the product from the tub by squeezing it the top half first needs to be twisted to the left to unlock or it won’t be able to squeeze together. The tub is airtight making it safe to take on your travels as it won’t spill in your bag especially if you are travelling by plane. I wish this product was launched last year before our trips overseas.
Only two pumps of the product is needed (a pea size is dispensed with each pump). The gel-cream itself is white in colour, has a gel texture that I was hoping would transform to a cream once applied to my skin but it has more of a thin almost watery texture when applied and has a beautiful calming lavender scent. To use all you do is rub two pumps of the gel-cream in your hands, cup your hands over your nose and mouth and take a deep breath in to inhale the calming scent of the product (the scent of the essential oils helps with relaxation and to promote deep sleep when doing this step) then smooth the product over the face and neck as the last step in your nighttime regimen (two pumps is enough for both the face and neck). Allow the gel-cream to melt into skin overnight. The product also helps to deeply penetrate any treatments put on beforehand such as Dermalogica’s Overnight Retinol Repair, Barrier Defense Booster etc.
You should all know by now that I am a huge fan of Dermalogica as the quality is great, results can be seen almost immediately and the brand works for my sensitive skin so I had high hopes for this product. I also wish that I could have used this product with the Overnight Retinol Repair for optimal results but I did however use it with my Barrier Defense Booster for a month and then without it for over a month, I’ll tell you why now.
I first started using the Sound Sleep Cocoon in conjunction with my Barrier Defense Booster for optimal results but my face became very oily and broke out along my forehead and mouth area. I then used it without the Barrier Defense Booster to see if the results would change. The gel-cream spreads easily and absorbs quickly because of its texture but my dry skin did not feel hydrated and moisturised when using the product alone. I used it for over a month without the Barrier Defense Booster but the results were the same, I literally woke up every morning with glowing skin but not the good type my skin became very oily which caused breakouts, with continuous use my skin just got worse, Moe used the Sound Sleep Cocoon on it’s own and had the same experience as me. My skin did however look more rested as it was no longer dull.
I feel that a night cream should be just that… a cream that is thick, rich, hydrating and nourishing. Maybe because of the Sound Sleep Cocoon’s gel texture and not enough cream in the formula it was not hydrating enough for my skin, my skin therefore over compensated for the dryness by producing too much oil which clogged up my pores resulting in breakouts. This product would be great for someone who doesn’t have very dry skin like I do and doesn’t mind the thin gel texture. The product did not in any way help me fall asleep but because of the essential oils in the formula the scent definitely made me feel more relaxed before bedtime. I like the concept and packaging of the product but unfortunately it didn’t work for me 🙁.
To be honest this is not my favourite Dermalogica product but I must admit that Dermalogica is very innovative with their ingredients and packaging. They always think of products that will help better our skin taking into account the struggles of modern society/modern lifestyle and environmental changes which impresses me every time a new product is launched.
