This past weekend Moe and I braced the freezing cold weather and went to watch a movie called American Animals which released on Friday 6 July 2018. We will be sharing with you a short review of the film without giving anything away and spoiling the movie for you.
What is American Animals about?
AMERICAN ANIMALS is an extraordinary and thrilling film about two varsity buddies, Warren Lipka (Evan Peters) and Spencer Reinhard (Barry Koeghan) who – desperate to break out of the ordinary – brazenly attempts to execute one of the most audacious art heists in US history at Transylvania University in Lexington, Kentucky, in 2004. Enlisting two more friends, budding accountant Eric Borsuk (Jared Abrahamson) and fitness fanatic, Chas Allen (Blake Jenner), the gang plots to steal valuable art books valued at $10-million… a scheme which eventually goes bust and ends in jail time for all involved, placing their seemingly bright futures in limbo!
Our thoughts on the movie
American Animals is not based on a true story it is a true story, it is a documentary type film that we would generally not watch but this movie in particular entertained us with its humor and illogical plans. The movie takes us back and forth from interviews with the actual people that the movie is based on telling us what went through their minds from beginning to end and their version of the story, to interviews with their loved ones explaining how the heist affected them then it takes us to their characters (actors playing their younger selves) and the events leading up to the heist, the actual heist and outcome.
The movie shows us their entire thought process from initiation to heist which dragged on a lot so we lost interest in some scenes. Each character had their own personal reason for wanting to take part and go ahead with the heist, it was well thought out and planned until the actual day the “well planned” out heist took an unexpected turn.
The characters realise that they didn’t plan the heist as well as they thought they had, it was nerve-wracking and intense watching the final process, we actually felt anxious for the characters as we got to know them on a personal level.
American Animals is an interesting movie filled with drama, action and some comedy with a couple of slow scenes leading up to the main event but overall we enjoyed the film and give it a 6/10.
The movie gets you thinking and questioning what makes your life extraordinary and to what lengths would one go to to make their lives more meaningful.
