Joburg Craft Rum Festival

Joburg Craft Rum Festival 2018

It all started in the 17th century when workers on sugarcane plantations in the Caribbean started distilling rum from molasses. Not long after, the Royal Navy started issuing its sailors with daily rations of rum which ultimately contributed to the spirit’s growth in popularity across the world. Since then, pirates have exchanged gold for rum, elections have been won because of rum and George Washington even insisted on a barrel of rum upon his inauguration.

Fast forward to 2018 and we are once again experiencing a boom in rum’s popularity. Experts are predicting that over the next couple of years we will see a variety of new brands entering the market, similar to what we’ve experienced in the gin industry over the last 2 years.

On Saturday 02 June the inaugural Joburg Craft Rum Festival will be hosted at Ground in Muldersdrift. This event will be a celebration of rum with more than 15 local and international rum suppliers showcasing their products. The event will give visitors an opportunity to sample a large variety of craft rums while learning more about the rum making process from the distillers. The festival will also boast live music, DJ’s and a variety of food stalls. So if you are interested in learning more about rum or simply want to enjoy a relaxing day out with friends, the Joburg Craft Rum Festival is not to be missed!
