Dermalogica UltraCalming Duo

You should all know by now that I swear by Dermalogica I have been using their products for over a year now and my skin has never felt and looked this amazing since I’ve been on Dermalogica. Dermalogica is one of a few brands that actually works for my dry and sensitive skin and a brand where you can immediately feel and see the results.

Dermalogica recently introduced two new additions to their UltraCalming range the Barrier Defense Booster which is a concentrated oil booster (facial oil) and the Calm Water Gel which is a lightweight water-gel moisturiser. I’m so happy that the UltraCalming range is expanding as this is the prescribed range for my skin, I have now included it to the rest of my UltraCalming skincare routine. This powerfully soothing duo helps balance sensitive skin and reduce redness with the UltraCalming system, it works by relieving, hydrating and restoring the skin.

My skin hasn’t been doing great recently due to stress, depression, lack of sleep and change of weather, all contributing factors to redness, sensitivity and eczema flare-ups so I decided to put the UltraCalming Duo to the test. The UltraCalming Duo claims to treat the irritation and dehydration caused by sensitive skin. Each product combines the best of nature’s botanical extracts with innovation from The International Dermal Institute to powerfully soothe skin sensitivity. Whether you have mild sensitivity or super sensitive skin, the UltraCalming Duo is the ultimate care solution. These products can be used together for maximum results or separately to address a specific concern. This duo helps defend against future flare-ups so your skin  looks and feels healthier continuously.

Sensitivity affects every skin type, from dry to oily, the causes vary from genetics to triggers like stress, diet, cosmetic ingredients, allergies and pollution. For me it’s a combination of all.

The two new additions to the UltraCalming range come in grey boxes with a purple/lilac strip which differentiates it from the other Dermalogica ranges (each range is colour coded). Each box contains an instruction leaflet (like all Dermalogica products) which has a list of the ingredients, instructions on how to apply each product with a diagram highlighting where the product should be used and a list of recommended products to add to your skincare regime and use in conjunction with the the Barrier Defense Booster and Calm Water Gel.

Dermalogica Barrier Defense Booster

The Barrier Defense Booster is a concentrated oil booster which soothes, nourishes and moisturises to restore balance to sensitive skin.

How does it work? Triple Defense Complex nourishes the skin, relieves dryness and reinforces barrier integrity against future irritation. Squalane locks in moisture while soothing Oat Oil helps combat sensitivity and support healthy-looking skin. Both the Barrier Defense Booster and Calm Water Gel contain Lavender Essential Oils which soothes the skin, relieves itching, adds moisture to the skin, accelerates the healing process, it is also an anti-inflammatory, detoxifies the skin and combats redness. Formulated without artificial fragrances or colours.

The Barrier Defense Booster reminds me a lot of the Phyto Replenish Oil which you can read about here. The Barrier Defense Booster comes in a white 30ml bottle with a grey lid and bottom and the lilac strip across showing that it forms part of the UltraCalming range. Underneath the bottle there’s a soft button to dispense the oil (this is different to any other facial oil packaging I have seen). The bottle has a pointy tip where the oil comes out, the oil itself is slightly yellow in colour and has a very pleasant and calming lavender scent.

The oil can be applied on cleansed dry skin before applying on a moisturiser or mixed in with your moisturiser. I like to use it before applying on the Calm Water Gel but if I’m in a hurry I apply 2-3 drops into a pea sized amount of the Calm Water Gel and mix it together by rubbing my hands together and then patting it onto my face and neck. Both ways are effective.

After cleansing with the Dermalogica Special Cleansing Gel and spritzing the UltraCalming Mist onto my face I then dispense 4-5 drops of the Barrier Defense Booster into the palm of my hand and rub my hands together then apply it onto my face and neck. There’s no instructions saying that the oil needs to be applied or massaged into the skin in a certain direction or certain way like some of the other Dermalogica products have, all it shows in the leaflet is that it shouldn’t be applied around the eye area and the lips. I know that it’s not ideal to use products around the eye area (unless it’s an eye cream) and on the lips as it might irritate those area’s but because I have eczema flare-ups around those areas I apply it there too. The oil is so gentle that it doesn’t burn or irritate my eyes when applied around the eye area.

The oil is not too thick or too thin, it spreads easily so 4-5 drops is enough for both the face and neck and it also absorbs quickly. The Barrier Defense Booster soothes my skin immediately upon application which I love, every time I have eczema flare-ups my skin becomes red, irritated and burns and this oil has helped a lot with relieving that l also don’t feel the urge to scratch my rashes after applying the oil. The oil instantly hydrates my skin and makes my face feel soft and smooth. The oil is lightweight so my skin doesn’t feel or look oily, greasy and shiny, and it doesn’t clog up my pores and cause any breakouts (which is always my fear when using a facial oil). I like to wait a minute or two for it to thoroughly absorb into my skin before applying the Calm Water Gel.

This is the perfect product for my dry sensitive skin especially with winter approaching. It’s nourishing and very hydrating which makes it feel like I don’t need to apply on a moisturiser but it’s not a moisturiser so ideally one should be used. It has really helped combat any redness and soothes my dry irritated skin giving me immediate and long-lasting relief.

Dermalogica Calm Water Gel

The Calm Water Gel is a weightless water-gel moisturiser that hydrates dry and sensitive skin. The refreshing gel formula transforms into a skin-quenching fluid upon application, forming a weightless barrier to help protect skin against environmental assault. Dual Hyaluronic Acid technology works in different skin surface layers to increase and lock in moisture.

How does it work? Apple Fruit and Glycerin hydrate and soften while defending skin against dryness. Cactus Pear Extract helps soothe sensitivity and imparts water-binding properties to help support healthy moisture balance. Aloe moisturisers, nourishes and soothes the skin, it also contains antioxidants like Vitamin E to help keep the skin healthy. Formulated without artificial fragrances or colours.

The Calm Water Gel comes in a 50ml white tube, lilac strip and a grey lid. It has a small opening so you can control how much of the product comes through when squeezing the tube. The actual moisturiser is milky white in colour and has a gel look but doesn’t have a gel feel but rather feels soft and light. It has the same lavender scent as the Barrier Defense Booster but not as intense.

After applying the Barrier Defense Booster to my face and neck I squeeze a pea size of the Calm Water Gel into my palm and rub my hands together to activate it. Once the Calm Water Gel is activated the texture changes, it becomes thin and almost watery in texture allowing it to spread easily, a pea size is more than enough for both my face and neck as the water texture allows it to spread more and it is quickly absorbed into the skin.

The Calm Water Gel is lightweight or rather weightless and feels as if nothing has been applied onto me skin but I definitely feel an instant and much needed boost of hydration. My skin instantly feels hydrated and soft to the touch, I also apply the Calm Water Gel over eczema rashes on my eyelids and lips. It instantly soothes the burning and itching eczema rashes on my face. My skin immediately looks radiant and feels healthy and smooth not dull, dry and not so red anymore. Only a small amount of each product is needed for each application so both products should last for a long time. Both products should be used twice a day for continuous relief.

I get compliments on my skin and often get asked what foundation I’m using when I have not applied any makeup on, these products have not only drastically improved my skin but it has boosted my confidence too.

This combo has helped with my eczema flare-ups and just from one day of using it I could already see and feel a difference. My eczema was barely visible my skin looked healthier not dull anymore but radiant and glowing. My eczema started to peel in just one use, the first night that I used this duo I could already feel a change in my skin when I woke in the morning my eczema started to peel and my skin no longer felt dry, irritated and was no longer burning like it was before applying on the products, two days later my eczema was gone! Below are before and after pictures of my skin after a week of using this amazing duo. The pictures are not edited in any way and taken in the same lighting.

The results are astonishing and speaks for itself, my skin feels healthy and hydrated throughout the day so there’s no need to reapply any of the products and my skin doesn’t get dry or oily either. My skin continues to improve with each use of the Barrier Defense Booster and Calm Water Gel. I wish that Dermalogica could create these two products into body products, my dry sensitive skin really needs it, it needs to start looking and feeling the same way that my face is looking and feeling right now, healthy, radiant and rash free, hint hint Dermalogica .

    1. Hi Dorothy, my review explains everything and how the products have helped with my sensitive skin. For the blemishes: if you wear makeup you need to remove your makeup before going to sleep, always exfoliate your skin 3 times a week or use the Dermalogica Superfoliant, use a hydrating moisturizer the Ultra Calming duo is perfect and always wear sunscreen.
